‘Manners makyth man’ William of Wykeham 1320-1404

William of Wykeham was a small boy when his family moved to Wickham village. John deScures, Lord of Wickham manor realised that William was a bright boy so he helped fund his education at Winchester school.

William became Bishop of Winchester, founded New College Oxford and was twice lord Chancellor of England. He died in Bishops Walham aged 84. At the time he was one of the richest men in Englad. His tomb lies in Winchester Cathedral.

His motto was ‘manners makyth man.’
